What Is Circumcision?

Circumcision is a procedure where the foreskin is removed from the penis. This is normally done during the first few weeks of life. Some families choose circumcision for religious or cultural reasons, but there are also medical benefits to removing the foreskin. Circumcision is a routine and safe procedure, and a local nerve block is used to decreases the pain. It is considered a personal choice for parents but there are some medical benefits.

What Are The Benefits?

Circumcision for newborn boys is a simple and quick procedure that provides a small benefit for the rest of their lives. Studies have shown circumcision reduces occurrences of urinary tract infections, especially in the first few years of life. Later in life, circumcision has been shown to reduce the contracting and spreading of STIs(sexually transmitted infections).  Most parents feel it is easier to keep the penis clean when their child is circumcised.  Lastly, if dad is circumcised that may be enough of a reason to want to have their baby circumcised.

Are There Risks?

There are risks of circumcision, but they are very small.  The risks include infection, excessive bleeding or a poor cosmetic result that may need to be revised when the baby is older.  The later risk is minimized if the circumcision is done by a doctor experienced in doing many circumcisions and being able to follow the baby afterwards to monitor the result.

What Should I Do?

If you have a newborn male, let us know about your plan for circumcision as early as possible so we can verify insurance and get you on the schedule.  If you are undecided, we would be happy to go over the pros and cons with you.  Experts recommend circumcision in the first month of life which entails less risk as general anesthesia is not needed. Circumcision is typically covered by insurance for newborns boys in this time period.
